Where I’ve Been (And Why I Haven’t Posted)

By Dave · Dad Life · showingupdad.com

It’s been a minute.

I didn’t disappear on purpose. Life just got loud for a few months and something had to give, and apparently that something was the blog.

Here’s what actually happened.

This one snuck up on me. For months I had a predictable window during the day to sit down and write. Then somewhere around month eleven, the naps got shorter and less consistent, and that window closed.

Now most nights after he’s down, instead of opening the laptop, I end up watching an episode of Mad Men or catching up on Silo before the new season drops. I keep telling myself I’ll write instead. I have not once done this.

Turns out toddlers don’t care about your content calendar.

He just turned one, so we threw him a birthday party, and then Nicole and I took him to Charleston right after. He got the full royal treatment down there, acai bowls and peaches poolside, the kid ate better than I did most days.

Between the party and the trip, that was most of a month gone. Both were worth every second of it, but it ate up the time I’d normally spend writing.

This is the big one. New job, new routine, new everything. The first few weeks of any job take up more mental space than you expect. I’ve been heads down just trying to figure out the new normal, and the blog got put on the back burner while I did.

None of this means I’m walking away from Showing Up Dad. If anything, the last few months are exactly the kind of stuff I started this blog to write about, the parts where life doesn’t cooperate with your plans and you just have to adjust.

I’m still figuring out what the new schedule looks like. Fewer naps, a new job, a kid who’s mobile now and into everything. But I’m getting back to it. Posts are coming, just maybe not on the exact cadence I had before.

Thanks for sticking around.
